Houston Sees Record High Import/Exports for Containers in April
May 19, 2022

The US Gulf Coast continued to see record import and exports to start the second quarter out of Houston, a vital port for Resin imports and exports.

Port Houston said this week had its busiest April on record, handling a total of 334,493 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) for the month, a 21% increase over containers year-over-year.

Year-to-date container volumes in April were also up 21% and surpassed 1 million, reaching 1,237,876 TEUs.

Port Houston said the ongoing surge in container volume was driven primarily by imports as loaded import TEUs reached an unprecedented high of 162,965 in April, its highest monthly loaded import volume ever, adding that Houston is becoming a favored national hub as importers redesign network strategies.

Port Houston also noted that in a positive sign for regional exports of resin, chemicals, cotton and other goods and products made in the US, loaded container exports for the month via Houston were up 25% in April at 114,860 TEUs (up 4% for the year). Outbound empty container volume was also up by 6% compared to the same month last year. YTD outbound empty container volume is up 80% with a total of 215,306 TEUs worth of empties shipped out of Port Houston's container terminals.
