Thermoplastic resins producer Braskem, in partnership with North-American University of Clemson and Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), is developing'interactive packaging' that will help clients to identify the condition of products inside packs. The new interactive packaging will usespecific indicators to demonstrate the conservation status of the content. The status, revealed through a change in packaging colour, will help to alert the consumer that the product is no longer fit for consumption. This interactive packaging technology can be used for multiple perishable products from various industries.Researchers associated with the development tested the technology on poultry, meat and fish, where any change to product pH changed the packaging colour."The interactive packaging development for a specific segment needs to be customised, so the interactive packaging arrival on the shelves should take a few more years."Braskem global innovation and technology director Patrick Teyssonneyre said: "This will make the consumer safer about the product quality that it takes home and, on the other hand, companies will control the integrity of their products after manufacturing them, be it during transport or in the point of sales."The company started researching on interactive packaging in 2013 and completed the proof of concept two years later. It produced the first prototypes last year and is currently looking to advance the progress of the study.Teyssonneyre added: "The interactive packaging development for a specific segment needs to be customised, so the interactive packaging arrival on the shelves should take a few more years."Braskem is one of the largest resin producers in the Americas with an output of nearly 20 million tonnes including basic chemicals and petrochemicals. With 41 operational units situated in Brazil, US, Germany and Mexico, the company exports manufactured products to nearly 100 countries.
